Which virtualization softwares will WinCC OA support in the future?

We want to inform you about significant changes to the VMware licensing model following its acquisition by Broadcom.

Key Changes to VMware's Offering:

1. Portfolio Transformation: Post-acquisition, VMware's product portfolio has undergone essential changes. For public information, please refer to: E.g. Heise News(German) or VMware's Official Blog.
2. Discontinuation of Free ESXi Version: The free version of ESXi has been discontinued. Further details can be found at VMware Knowledge Base.
3. Transition to Subscription Model: Perpetual licenses have been phased out in favor of a subscription-based model.
4. Reseller Restructuring: Only larger resellers will continue to operate as VMware resellers. Smaller resellers will no longer be able to source products directly from VMware and must instead purchase through larger resellers.
   
   All these changes may result in a significant price increase for many customers.
    

Our Response and Recommendations:

• Siemens Commitment: Siemens ETM will continue to test WinCC OA on VMware virtualization products.
  Additionally, we are exploring alternative solutions, such as Proxmox.
• Alternative Virtualization Solutions: Customers may consider other virtualization solutions (e.g., Nutanix, VIrtualBox) at their discretion. While we cannot test or officially endorse these alternatives in detail, the excellent abstraction of WinCC OA from operating systems leads us to expect smooth operation across different environments.
• Support and Troubleshooting: Should any issues arise related to unapproved virtualization solutions, Siemens ETM's troubleshooting will require, that the replication of the issue on our tested/ supported environments is possible.
