Drag&Drop - copy or move files and directories

Copy / Move

In the Project Tree, you can move or copy individual files or entire directories via drag&drop - even between project hierarchies (provided a sub-project is not locked).

You can delete directories recursively without having to delete all files in them individually first.

If you do not hold a modifier key ( Shift or Ctrl), then GEDI will ask you for the desired drop action if both (Move/Copy) are available.

For example, from a "locked" project only the Copy action is possible and therefore no query appears when dropping, but copying is performed immediately.

If you hold Shift, a move is performed without query (if this is allowed). If you hold Ctrl, copying is performed.

Wrong Drops (Move/Copy)

An attempt is made to protect the user from false "drops", so that only files of the same type (e.g. panel files) can get into the allowed directory. E.g. panels can also only be moved or copied to the panels area, scripts only to /scripts or /libs, image files only to /pictures (and only those formats that the UI can read).

Note: For directories, the program does not check whether all files in all subdirectories of the directory to be moved also fit into the destination directory.

If a file is to be dropped into a directory in which the file name already exists, this is not possible. Drop is only possible into directories. If the drag operation is made over a file, the parent directory appears in the tree marked as the destination.

Move/Copy/Delete many files

If many files are moved/copied/deleted, then a progress bar with a Stop button appears in the GEDI status bar in the left area.

Click Stop to cancel the process. Files changed until then will not be restored. It might happen that a directory was only partly copied/deleted/moved.

Note: If there are a lot of files, copying/deleting or moving may result in long runtime of the command.

File Explorer files

You can also drop files/directories into the project tree from outside (File Explorer etc.).

Note: There is no guarantee that dropped files are actually of the correct content. You are responsible for the content.

Sub directories

If you want to drop into a subdirectory, you can hold the mouse cursor over a directory in the tree for 1 second, then the directory is automatically expanded or collapsed.

Note: By displaying an icon at the cursor during the drag process, you can now see this icon also when dragging a PanelRef to a panel in the GEDI.

Restrictions

  • You cannot copy or move individual colors from a colorDB file.
  • The selection of multiple files/folders is currently not supported.
  • Copying/moving a large number of files/folders is not recommended because of the long runtime.
